Tina Lackner Admissions Coordinator Admissions Policy 7.Icons/Solid/12.Dropdown Up ADMISSIONS POLICY In the process of admission, candidates are placed in different categories, based on the Association (VISA) statutes: Category 1 - Children of officials of the International Organizations who are based in Austria and as specified by the Austrian Foreign Ministry. Category 2 - Children of members of a diplomatic or consular service based in Vienna, irrespective of their nationality. Category 3 - Children without Austrian citizenship whose parents are employed within the international business sector. Category 4 - Other children. Within this priority group are offered places according to the following criteria: a) Children of VIS alumni. b) Children whose parents have lived and worked for at least two years outside Austria recently (no longer than five years ago), and where the children have attended an English language school. c) Children whose parents can demonstrate that they expect to relocate to a non-German speaking country within the next two years. d) Children whose mother-tongue is not German. e) Children who were born outside Austria. f) Children whose parents have different nationalities. g) Children whose parents can demonstrate for any other reason that they have a specific need for an international education in the English language. h) All other Admissions. The criteria for Other children , are not arranged in order of precedence, but help the Admissions Coordinator to build up a profile of each candidate in this category in order for the Director to determine priority. In each of the groups, a special priority is accorded to those children who are applying to re-enter the school (within 2 years) and to those children who have siblings already in the school. Apart from these criteria, the admissions decision is determined by the date on which we receive a complete online application of a student via our application system OpenApply, including the Application Fee, copy of passport (ID), copies of the two most recent school reports and the online assessment from the child’s current school. Students applying for admission to VIS from another school need to provide a complete record of their prior education, including academic transcripts, standardized test results, educational support plans and other relevant documents. Students applying for admission to the VIS secondary section may be asked to complete a standardized test to assess English language and numeracy proficiency for placement purposes. Students applying for admission to high school grades 9-11 will need to provide evidence of academic English proficiency, including a standardized English reading assessment. A minimum level of academic English language proficiency is a requisite for admission. Apart from these criteria, places on the waiting list are determined by the date on which we receive a complete online application of a student via our application system OpenApply, including the Application Fee, copy of passport (ID), copies of the two most recent school reports and the online assessment from your child’s current school. It is imperative that you provide contact numbers and email addresses on OpenApply where we can be sure of reaching you. We shall be taking admissions decisions as of the beginning of March for those who wish to begin school at the start of the academic year in August. For applicants that wish to be admitted to school during the year, places will be offered as vacancies occur. Parents whose children are offered places will have a specific period of time to confirm their acceptance by payment of the Admissions Fee. As you are aware students enrolled at Vienna International School come from over 110 different countries in the world and at the moment 85 different mother tongues are spoken amongst the 1400 students enrolled. Candidates for admission to our school will be placed by age and school history. Once you have provided the Admissions Office with all the requested application documents the Admissions Coordinator will confirm the grade. If your child’s current placement is different to the one our policy suggests, the VIS Placement Committee will meet to give their recommendation. Lessons start at 08:30 am. The academic day in Primary school finishes at 14:55 pm and Secondary school ends at 15:15 pm. What curriculum does VIS offer? VIS is an International Baccalaureate School. We offer the IB PYP (Primary Years Programme) from the ELC up to Grade 5, IB MYP (Middle Years Programme) in Grades 6 - 10, and IB DP (Diploma Programme) in Grades 11 and 12. What grade will my child be placed in? Candidates for admission to VIS will be placed by age and school history. Once you have provided the Admissions Office with the date of birth of your child and the intended date of admission the Admissions Coordinator will confirm the grade. If your child’s current placement is different to the one our age group policy suggests, the VIS Placement Committee will meet to give their recommendation. However, some parents drive their children to school themselves, but parking is a problem. Does VIS maintain waiting lists? Yes, when necessary. As an international school, VIS has a continuous turnover of students. This means that when you apply, our classes may be full and we will open a waiting list acording to the VIS Admissions Policy for the respective grade level concerned. Is financial aid available at VIS? Unfortunately VIS is not in the position to offer any financial aid. Is the Application Fee and Admissions Fee refundable? The Application Fee is a non-refundable payment that enables us to cover the administrative costs of the application process. Re-entering and re-applying students must also pay the Application Fee.
